Firefighters are prone to developing various cancers and cardiovascular disease, raising concerns about the chemicals they are exposed to on the job. We ask firefighters to wear silicone wristbands and dog-tags that capture their chemical exposures so we can learn more about them. Understanding which chemicals are present could inform decontamination procedures after a fire and more effective design of firefighters' personal protective equipment.
I love that I get to learn new things every day. I am very curious about the world around me, and this job lets me explore some really interesting questions. Being in science also provides an amazing community of people with rich ideas and experience.
I want to help communities investigate the impact environmental toxins may have on their well-being.
I think my high school science teachers in biology and chemistry spurred my interest in science. They were awesome teachers, and their excitement about the subjects really fueled my curiosity.
