Open Access Requirement

All P42-related published articles need to be submitted for open access through the NIH portal.  The final, published versions of NIH-funded articles are supplied to PMC only through publishers who have formal PMC participation agreements. NIH-funded author manuscripts must be submitted through the NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system. The submission process may be initiated by either an author or a publisher, but must be completed by the author.

Most life science journals automatically submit your paper for open access, creating a PMCID. Please check the list of journals to see if your journal has an automated service. If not on the list, you will need to upload the paper yourself. The submitted paper will then be given a PMCID number.

Non-life-science papers are not generally submitted by the journal so you will need to submit your paper for Open Access.
