Our Center is using social media to highlight our research projects. We started card news as one strategy to do this. Card News is a form of information technology that visualizes major issues at a glance. In other words, the information is designed for social media, breaking away from the text-based structure of general news.

Card News is a new format that increases readability and image ratio for mobile platforms, with an emphasis on using images. It is often used on social media, including Facebook pages and Instagram. Short sentences and large fonts are used to minimize eye fatigue, and emotions and communication are carried out using witty writing and relevant graphics.

In the case of Card News, there are two main types: Information and Storytelling. Information card news often starts with a title such as ‘how to do ~ or top 5 of ~’. It is a type that summarizes and lists information about a particular topic for ease of reading. On the other hand, storytelling Card News highlights science stories and social issues, using a storytelling format.

The goal of science is to conduct relevant research that can improve public health. However, there is an accompanying  social responsibility. As science is federally funded, there is a responsibility to explain the research we are doing to the public. In the same vein, communication with the public is an essential factor in the development of science.

This is all the more so in the reality that science and technology have an increasing influence on our society. In order to achieve scientific popularization, we believe scientists must meet the public first. Card News is one tool of many that can help us do that.

One way our Center is sharing our research  is through the storytelling manner offered by ‘Card News’. Directed by Dr. Robyn Tanguay, our program brings together a multidisciplinary team with years of experience on environmental health issues. We wanted to highlight how our research will impact public health and the environment. We developed a 6-part series of Card News highlighting our research on PAHs.
