What is the goal of your research?

My research focuses on how genetic differences present between individuals alters their susceptibility to environmental contaminants. Small alterations in the genetic code may have a significant impact on protein production and function. This affects how we process chemicals and whether we experience toxicity.

What excites you about Superfund research?

I enjoy tackling one problem at a time and the satisfaction it brings if my approach works. The field of toxicology presents no shortage of problems.

As a scientist, what do you hope your research helps accomplish?

My work will help experts become better informed about risk due to environmental contaminants. I also believe that it could be applied to pharmaceutical research in the future. In general, better informed people will make better decisions about their health and I hope my research will help achieve this.

What was an interest or experience you had that contributed to your decision to become a scientist?

The constant desire to understand how things work has inevitably led me down the path to becoming a scientist. The questions just get harder to answer along the way.

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do when you aren’t doing science?

I like to spend time outdoors, so I do things like hike and camp. I like to boat and swim as well. I don’t have the patience to fish, but I do like to crab. When inside I like to watch good movies and TV.
